Today we visited two more of the maqamat or Shi'i shrines that can be found throughout Bahrain. First we went to the shrine of Sheikh Mohammed Sabsab in Dar Klaib. However we found nothing but empty ground there right now; it seems a new building is going to be constructed as the old one was dilapidated. So rather than post a photo of bare earth, here's an image I've taken from al-imam.net, of the shrine as it was. (The website also has a map showing all the maqamat or mazarat in Bahrain.)
There are more photos on this forum showing how the place was before. The only information about Shaikh Mohammed Sabsab I could find is here on the same forum (in Arabic). After leaving Dar Klaib we went to Askar, to visit the shrine of Sa'sa'a bin Sohan (Arabic here) who was a companion of Imam Ali.
According to al-imam.net:
Sa'sa'eh, a shaheed, was one of Imam Ali's companions. He was very loyal to Imam Ali and Ahl Albayt and was known for his power of speech and the power of his tongue. … His love for Imam Ali had made him a very strong person, for he fought in all of Imam Ali's battles. It was in the days of Mu'aweyeh that he was threatened to be exiled because of his clashes with the ruling Caliph and therefore, he was sent to

Dear Ayesha,
Hope you are well. I just came across your blog. Great stuff! I am writing to you because my partner and I are launching a website that will be populated with cross-cultural information about every country in the world. We will be looking to the web community to help do this with all the information being available for free. I was wondering if you and/or members from your community may be able to help us out with the Bahrain pages. We would love your input. Let me know if you would be open to this and I'll send along a brief questionnaire. Please also feel free to check out the website, become a member (it's free!) and add to the guide.

dear aysha,
regarding the history of sh. sabsab shrine, there is a refrence from which we can san it was build at leas 900 (nine hundreds) years ago. it is close to an important port near by called saddad, used to be close to the castles of the ayonid dynesty, as a matter of fact, one of the ayonid prince was murder while praying in the shrine of sabsab.
unfortunetly, many data of the history of old shrines and mousque are missing. The history of these places is to be written in the light of new researches such as those of the french archeological mession, they have survaied the islamic inscriptions in bahrain specialy those of al-khamis mosques, in bahrain only few has access to these the data has been published in french. I have Translated most of the french work, but still there are new sources for data.
the inscription add lots to the unwritten history of bahrain during the (9th century - 16th century) period.
Michael – thank you for your comment and email, I'll take a look at your website
Hussain – that's interesting, thank you for the information. You are doing important work by translating the inscriptions. Are the translations on your website?
aysha,
am working on compiling the inscription in a framework together with the historical analysis, it will be the first work on old mosque to be presented in arabic, and then I will post it free for all, surving one goal, making our history and heritage available for every researcher and reader, instud of beeing restrected to certain group.
If you needed any historical information, do not hesitate to ask,
That's good to know, and thank you very much for the offer, I may be in touch about some research I am doing.
